International Compost Awareness Week

International Compost Awareness WeekThe following message was released today by Environment and Local Government Minister Brian Kenny to mark International Compost Awareness Week, May 1-7:

Recycling organics through composting is a simple and rewarding way to help protect the environment.

Recognizing this week enables us to raise awareness of the many benefits of composting. Composting supports soil health and reduces erosion, adds nutrients to gardens and crops, and reduces the amount of waste in our landfill sites.

Most importantly, composting can play an important role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Landfill sites account for approximately 38 per cent of Canada’s total methane emissions. The gas is produced, in large part, by the organics buried in the refuse. Reducing the amount of organics we send to the landfill is an immediate and concrete way we can all help mitigate the impacts of climate change.

International Compost Awareness Week offers us the opportunity to learn more about protecting the environment and encourages us to adopt greener habits. We can all make a difference.

Our government encourages New Brunswickers to start their own compost pile. We support and thank the many individuals and organizations such as schools, community centres and private businesses, which are already taking the time to learn about and implement composting programs.

More information on managing and reducing waste is available on the Department of Environment and Local Government’s website.
