The MHL has produced a long line of success stories both on and off the ice.

Year in and year out, the attention to efforts in the classroom remains a high priority for all teams in the league, making honouring one specific player a difficult task.

This year’s MHL Scholastic Player of the Year is forward Sam Cameron of the Woodstock Slammers.

Cameron, who turns 20 on May 12th, appeared in all 50 regular season games for the Slammers in 2016-17, scoring 13 goals and adding 17 assists, placing him second on the team in scoring. The Fredericton, New Brunswick native also excelled in the classroom. This year saw him achieve a 4.1 grade point average while working towards a Bachelor of Science in Engineering at the University of New Brunswick. Cameron transferred to UNB after attending Mount Allison University while a member of the Amherst Ramblers in 2015-16. During his time at Mount Allison, where he first started working towards his Bachelor of Science, the second year MHLer also maintained a 4.1 GPA.

“Sam played a key role on our team this season playing on our top line, the first penalty kill unit and finished the season on the first power play unit,” explained Slammers Head Coach Fabian Joseph. “He also was a member of our leadership group as assistant captain. His work ethic and commitment to the team gained respect from the coaching staff, his teammates and the fans.”

Cameron’s dedication in the classroom, not to mention his ability to balance his hockey life and academic life, were key factors in his nomination and eventual award win.

“The commitment to hockey has afforded Sam the transferable skills of work ethic, dedication and high standards to the classroom,” Joseph said. “He travelled to Fredericton, NB from Woodstock, NB to attend classes at the University of New Brunswick in a very challenging engineering program. This one hour commute and heavy academic program was not used as an excuse to affect his practice habits or team commitments. He was one of our most consistent players throughout the season playing in all 50 games.”

MHL President Brian Whitehead echoed the sentiments of Cameron’s head coach.

“Sam’s work on the ice speaks for itself,” Whitehead said. “Finishing second in team scoring and suiting up for all 50 regular season games only scratches the surface of this young man’s dedication. His heavy course load at UNB would be difficult for most students to manage. However, Sam’s strong work ethic and willingness to literally go the extra mile proved evident both in his ability to excel both on the ice and in the classroom.”

Along with the award, Cameron has earned a $1000 scholarship courtesy of RBC, for which a presentation was recently made. He is now eligible for the $5000 RBC national scholarship, which will be announced by the CJHL and Hockey Canada during the RBC Cup National Jr.A Championship, being held in Coburg, Ontario from May 13th-21st. One nominee from each of the ten leagues under the umbrella of the CJHL are in consideration for the national award.
