Reminder: Minimum Wage to Increase on April 1st

NBlogo-300x133.jpgNew Brunswickers are reminded that the minimum wage will increase from $10.30 per hour to $10.65 per hour on April 1st, 2016.

“This initiative will provide wage increases to thousands of hard-working New Brunswickers,” said Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Francine Landry. “Putting more money in the pockets of workers helps keep our economy prosperous, so families can continue to live, work and stay here in New Brunswick.”

The timing of this increase aligns with Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. The three Maritime provinces recently agreed to align their respective minimum wage increases which are part of an initiative to reduce red tape by harmonizing regulatory changes.

Landry said this increase will help New Brunswickers meet their needs and improve their quality of life.

“This helps some of our province’s most vulnerable workers cope with increases to their cost of living while providing predictability for businesses to plan for payroll changes,” said Landry. “We want businesses to continue to remain competitive, but at the same time ensure that workers have fair wages.”

This marks the second increase to the minimum wage in New Brunswick since December 2014. The provincial government plans to further increase the minimum wage to $11 per hour by 2017 and thereafter by the rate of inflation.
