Buying Local During Holiday Season

By choosing local and independent businesses for services, shopping, dining and other needs during the holidays, consumers not only enjoy a distinctive and personal experience, but also help build and strengthen communities and the economy.

“Local businesses are the heart and soul of our community; they grow the economy, create jobs and foster innovation,” said Economic Development Minister Francine Landry. “Local businesses employ local people, donate to local organizations, and attract visitors to the community. They are a vital part of what makes our neighbourhoods unique. The provincial government supports every opportunity to promote the excellent products made here and encourages the public to choose local.”

Local companies produce a variety of items suitable for holiday gifts.

“When planning for the holidays, think about the award-winning products that are being produced in your community,” said Landry. “While it is important that we support our local businesses every day of the year, the holiday season gives us the opportunity to celebrate the passion and expertise local business owners contribute to our province.”

Promoting the consumption of locally produced food was identified as one part of 12 opportunities for growth being pursued by the government in the New Brunswick Economic Growth Plan. The plan sets out the framework for driving the economy forward. It is a directional plan outlining how the government will mobilize to ensure there is a co-ordinated, complementary effort to improve the economy and realize maximum benefits.
