Truro, N.S. (June 11, 2020) – The Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL) is proud to announce Drew Toner of the Grand Falls Rapids as the winner of the Bob Boucher Hockey Assistance Fund (BBHAF) Scholarship for the 2019-20 season.
The late Mr. Boucher was a coach and executive, working at levels ranging from Nova Scotia Intermediate to the NHL over the course of his long career. He coached the St. Mary’s (SMU) Huskies for 13 years and led the team to the National Championship game in four consecutive seasons from 1970 to 1973. Mr. Boucher was inducted into the SMU Hall of Fame in 1998. The scholarship was established in his name several years ago by a number of Mr. Boucher’s former players as a means to support students within the game who have displayed exceptional scholastic achievements.
On the ice, Toner recently finished his third season in the MHL with his hometown team. Grand Falls acquired the 19-year-old from the Campbellton Tigers just before the start of the 2019-20 campaign. Toner posted 13 goals and 17 assists in 48 games with the Rapids. In his previous two seasons with the Tigers, Toner tallied 13 goals and 28 assists in 90 games. He was a key contributor for Campbellton in the team’s run to the Canadian Tire Cup Final, with five goals and three assists in 13 games.
Toner enrolled at the University of New Brunswick (UNB) in September 2018 with an eye on a degree in bio-mechanical engineering and plans to eventually study sports medicine. Thus far, he’s maintaining a 4.0 grade-point average, juggling school, work, and hockey. Toner was named the Rapids’ student-player of the month in November 2019. He’s involved in a number of initiatives in the community, including serving as assistant coach of a local Atom A team and as a motivational speaker for the local francophone high school hockey team. Toner also takes part in the team’s “Raplecture” program, which helps local students with their reading, and acts as a tutor for students and teammates alike.
The scholarship will be presented at a future Grand Falls Rapids game.

Drew Toner est le bénéficiaire de la bourse d’études 2019-2020 du Fonds d’assistance au hockey Bob Boucher
Truro, N.-É. (11 juin 2020) – La Ligue de hockey junior des Maritimes (LHM) est fière d’annoncer que Drew Toner, des Rapides de Grand-Sault, est le bénéficiaire de la bourse d’études du Fonds d’assistance au hockey Bob Boucher (FAHBB) pour la saison 2019-2020.
De son vivant, M. Boucher était un entraineur et un cadre infatigable qui a œuvré à divers niveaux, allant des rangs intermédiaires de la Nouvelle-Écosse jusqu’à la LNH. Il a été entraineur des Huskies de St. Mary’s (SMU) pendant 13 ans et a mené l’équipe à la finale du championnat canadien pendant quatre saisons consécutives, de 1970 à 1973. M. Boucher a été intronisé au Temple de la renommée de la SMU en 1998. La bourse a été établie en son nom il y a plusieurs années par un certain nombre d’anciens hockeyeurs de M. Boucher comme moyen de soutenir les joueurs qui ont affiché des rendements scolaires exceptionnels.
Toner a récemment terminé sa troisième saison dans la LHM avec son équipe locale. Grand-Sault a acquis le joueur de 19 ans des Tigres de Campbellton juste avant le début de la campagne 2019-2020. Toner a inscrit 13 buts et 17 passes en 48 matchs avec les Rapides. Lors de ses deux saisons précédentes avec les Tigres, Toner a récolté 13 buts et 28 passes en 90 matchs. Il a joué un rôle important dans la course de l’équipe à la finale de la coupe Canadian Tire, avec cinq buts et trois passes en 13 parties.
Toner s’est inscrit à la University of New Brunswick (UNB) en septembre 2018 en vue d’un diplôme en génie biomécanique et prévoit éventuellement étudier en médecine sportive. Jusqu’à présent, il maintient une moyenne de 4,0, jumelant études, travail et hockey. Toner a été nommé joueur-étudiant du mois des Rapides en novembre 2019. Il est impliqué dans un certain nombre de projets dans la communauté, notamment en tant qu’entraineur adjoint d’une équipe locale atome A et en tant que conférencier et motivateur pour le hockey local des écoles secondaires francophones. Toner participe également au programme « Raplecture » de l’équipe, qui aide les élèves locaux à lire et agit comme tuteur pour les étudiants et les coéquipiers.
La bourse sera présentée lors d’un futur match des Rapides de Grand-Sault.
